Hervé Fabre makes some of our most-loved Malbec—and his HJ Fabre Gran Reserva Malbec may just be the best of all. A full-bodied and easy-drinking red, it offers sweet raspberry and strawberry fruit hemmed in by subtle tannins.
Hervé takes a “no-expense-spared” approach with his wines, a quality commitment that's earned him the title of Winemaking Legend from critic (and Master of Wine) Tim Atkin, as well as Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2018 International Wine Challenge.
This Gran Reserva is the perfect example: Its grapes were hand-harvested from 80-year-old vines and placed in small baskets to avoid damaging the fruit, then sorted meticulously—bunch by bunch and grape by grape—by the hands of Hervé and his cellar crew. Later, after keeping careful watch over fermentation, he left the wine to mature for a year in oak.
The result is focused, yet pillow-soft on the palate, with sumptuous red fruit singing across a long finish. Drinking beautifully now, this special-occasion Malbec will also cellar well for several years. Serve with hearty roasts or prime aged filets–and don’t delay your order.
