Aside from the major Port producers, José’s family quinta (estate) is the most awarded in the country. In fact, the Da Silva family has been an acclaimed producer and exporter of Portuguese wine since the early 19th century. And quality’s really taken off in the past few years.

José begins with a blend of Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo in Spain) and local Portuguese star Castelão. Six months in Portuguese and American oak marries inviting spice characters with blackberry, plum and black cherry jam notes. Ideal for seared red meats or hearty stews, it’s plenty smooth enough to enjoy on its own, too.
