Young winemaker Ludovica Crugnale followed la chiamata (the calling) to create classic wines in Italy’s coastal Abruzzo region. After spending time soaking up the knowledge of her mentor, Riccardo Cotarella, she was inspired to create the gorgeous, lush and fruit-forward La Chiamata Trebbiano.
Though she works in an ultra-modern cellar, Ludovica champions the great, time-honored winemaking methods of the region. For La Chiamata, she looked to local legend Signora Maria Elisii, who carefully tends and harvests Trebbiano grapes in her beloved, less-than-10-acre vineyard.
Maria, now one of Ludovica’s dear friends, began working in the area during the 1950s, back when women harvested, selected and cleaned grapes, before packaging them in special boxes to deliver to cooperatives. Today, she and her son, Graziano, specialize in limited-production releases like this one.
