When Golan Flam and Eran Pick, winemakers in Israel’s Judean Hills region, decided to branch out of their native terroir, they set their sights high: Bordeaux. And when they heard Château Tour du Haut-Moulin—a Cru Bourgeois gem set between the iconic Margaux and St-Julien appellations—was up for sale, they leapt. Now, they need to clear out the cellar to make room for their own production, which is how we landed the estate’s namesake bottle at a jaw-droppingly good price.
Established in 1870, the château had been run by the Cazaux-Poitou family for six generations, with Lionel and Carol Poitou the latest at the helm, and graciously sticking around to show Golan and Eran the ropes.
Located on a gravel soiled plateau in the small commune of Cussac–Fort-Médoc, its 24 vineyard acres stretch across some seriously good soils and slopes. They’re less than a mile from the Gironde, which moderates the temperature, helping the grapes ripen slowly and steadily, and providing protection from frost and drought. The excellent fruit was undoubtedly part of the reason the estate earned elite Cru Bourgeois status back in the 1980s and has upheld the title (which is reviewed every five years) ever since.
A classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot aged 12 months in French oak, the 2022 is already a thing of beauty (with the potential to age for around a decade, if you so choose). You can expect a deep ruby color, a remarkable purity of dark fruit flavors and finely polished tannins knitting everything together.
Though we’re excited to see what Golan and Eran do with this incredible winery, we’re even more excited to offer you a wine of this caliber for this price while they figure it all out. Trust us when we say, if you’re at all a fan of Bordeaux, you’ll want to act fast to order some.
