A medium-bodied and approachable French red with enticing black fruit flavors and toasty spice, Belle Roche is the latest success of the talented Mark Hoddy, one of our favorite French winemakers and one of the most adventurous guys we know.
Mark loves to explore the wilds of southern France in search of special, off-the-beaten-path vineyards. His latest venture? Find the best fruit to craft a stylish southern French Cab with loads of flavor—and a top-value price tag. Mission accomplished.
After traipsing across the garrigue-strewn countryside of the Pays d'Oc, he found just the right plot, harvested grapes and hustled them back to his winery in Bordeaux. That's when his buddy (and Château Haut-Brion-trained winemaker) Jean Marc Sauboua stepped in to help him craft this first-class value.
You can expect a charming nose of sour cherry and blueberry jam, and an ample palate of blackberry and black currant. We recommend you decant the wine an hour or so before serving to soften the tannins and open up all those lovely black-fruit flavors. It will be delicious with a juicy steak, rack of lamb and even hearty stews or casseroles.
